The Everglades
So after you go, go, go in the hectic
big city, a great place for a "sanity check" is Florida's Everglades.
The Everglades National Park is a relatively short drive from the city of Miami, about an hour, and in the park you've got tranquility that you can't buy in the city.
Don't go looking in the park for airboat rides or alligator wrestling. You can find that crap elsewhere in the Everglades, but not within the national park boundries.
Take the Florida Turnpike down to the end (Florida City). Make a right at the first traffic light. Follow the road around, about ten miles and you should be at the ranger station. Ask for a map from the
ranger. Call ahead if you need more information, the Park Headquarters phone number is 305-242-7700 and for lodging or tours, 305-253-2241.
A good place to start your day in The Everglades is the Royal Palm Visitor Center. Walk the Anhinga and Gumbo-Limbo trails. You'll see lots of wildlife, including: alligators, anhingas, egrets, herons, various and plantlife. Don't forget to bring bug repellent and have a tank of gas in your car before entering The Everglades.
